Top 6 Outdoor Holiday Adventures (w/in 2 Hours of Grand Rapids)

We aren’t sure about you, but there is something extra special about the holiday season here in Michigan and we fully embrace every experience we are presented with in order to make lasting memories. We are continuously on the hunt for fun things to do and thought we would share a few top picks.

There are undoubtfully so many other amazing things out there but this specific list was curated based on 1) proximity – all recommendations are within 2 hours of Grand Rapids making each an opportunity for a fun filled yet easy road trip for those located in the area, 2) being outdoors – it’s no surprise that we enjoy the outdoors, and believe that the memories made are only that much more special, and 3) crowd favorites – these picks were chosen based on a combination of feedback from others, our personal favorites and a bit of research. Enjoy!

  1. Holland

The Kerstmarkt in Holland is simply a must. These types of markets pop up all over the Netherlands during the Christmas season offering a venue for unique and local artisans to sell their items and for patrons to gather. It offers a beautiful way to celebrate the culture, staying true to Holland Dutch heritage, enjoy the outdoors, and snag up fresh Christmas greenery from local farms in addition to homemade baked goods and other beautifully crafted items. This runs November 19 – December 11.

  1. Kalamazoo

You may actually think you were transported to the North Pole when you visit the Reindeer Ranch in Kalamazoo. You will be amazed at these majestic animals. The ranch offers tours where you can learn all about the reindeer, where they come from and what makes them so unique. It is an unforgettable experience that everyone will enjoy.

  1.  St. Joseph

There are so many different lighting displays around the state, but Light up the Bluff is a favorite. It is made up of over 1 million lights that transform Lake Bluff Park into a winter wonderland, remaining up until Valentine’s Day. Plus St. Joseph is the cutest beach town and enjoying the beautiful lights while outdoors and along the lakeshore is a pretty special experience.

  1. Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth  is charming any time of year but during the holidays it is an especially magical time. Surround yourself in a scene of dancing lights, a singing Christmas trees, shiny ice rink, garland covered, perfectly lit Bavarian architecture that seem to whisk you away to a state of pure bliss. Be sure to cross over the historic covered bridge and even take a carriage ride to take it all in.

  1. Laingsburg

Do yourself a favor and visit Peacock Road Family Farm. Not only can you select your perfect tree and cut it yourself or choose a pre-cut option, but you can take a train or wagon ride, meet with Santa at a cabin in the woods, enjoy hot cocoa, sweet treats, stay warm by a winter bon-fire, and simply take it all in at this beautiful Michigan family farm.

  1. Grand Rapids
Finally, no list is complete without mentioning Frederick Meijer Gardens. It’s a tried-and-true experience that never disappoints. You will have to spend a bit of your time inside to view the Holiday & Christmas Traditions exhibition which honors cultures and holiday traditions from around the world and has grown to 46 unique displays depicting fact and folklore, past and present. But then venture outdoors to the magnificent grounds and discover the beauty of nature with a wintertime walk.
